The High Dive : 1801 Morena Blvd.92110
Every once in a while, I need to stop and grab a quick bite somewhere by myself. On this day, I had a busy schedule ahead consisting of a Costco run, a client meeting in Bay Park and a butcher stop at Seisels Meats all before noon. I had two options in the area that came to mind… Head over to Catalina Offshore in the hopes that Tommy the Fishmonger was grilling something that would hold me until I go home with whatever I bought there or drop into Chef Rose Peyron’s place on Morena Blvd., the High Dive. Maybe I’d check out the drool-worthy BLT she posted on Facebook last week.
I got street parking right in front and went straight for the menu and cocktail list. I hadn’t realized how hungry I was until it was apparent my decision-making abilities had left my brain. I asked for Chef but of course, this was her day off. That’s ok. No problem, I thought! I’ll just order the new BLT. Not today! That was a special and it sold out lickity split. Lord have mercy! I couldn’t do this alone… I was hungry.
Luckily, the understanding wait staff was able to help a helpless gal decide on a cocktail to settle the low blood sugar. 😉 Once the delicious Mamasita ($8 Ballast Point Habanero Vodka, Lemon, Agave, Watermelon, Tajin Rim) landed on my lips, I was able to come up with a solution. GET ROSE ON FACEBOOK! With an urgent tone I proclaimed my need for immediate assistance directly on her FB page; no private messaging here. I was desperate.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich
Chef Rose suggested the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich. This sandwich was crazy good and exactly what I needed to get me through the rest of the afternoon. Don’t let the casual menu description fool you. This breaded chicken is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Now you may think an aioli sauce and fried chicken might be too rich. Let me tell you, the crunchy pickles cut right through and give that extra bit of acid a sandwich of this heft needs. This wasn’t all though. The crowning achievement was the right bread. This isn’t just any ordinary sesame seed bun. This is Bread & Cie deliciousness; beautiful, light and fluffy on the inside. The sandwich came with seasoned, light, battered fries that were tasty and perfect for a salt fiend like this gal.
Dining alone here is easy. Staff is very friendly, check up on you often enough. (They don’t ignore you just because you are alone and bug you so much you can’t wait to leave.) I’ll definitely be back.
TAKEAWAY: Next time Chef puts a special up on Facebook, I won’t lag.
