Aye Aye Aye! Okay, that’s about as much Spanish as I know but after attending Thursday nights media kick-off party for the 18th San Diego Latino Film Festival, it’s the only language I now want to speak. There’s just something about the celebration and recognition of the Latino culture in arts that makes me want to slip in to a sexy salsa dress and shake my groove thing out on the dance floor. Unfortunately Ms. Yolanda Selene Walther-Meade, once again, beat me to the punch and captivated the entire room with her exquisite dancing capabilities. And you just can’t successfully follow up a performance like hers.
Ms. Walther-Meade hosted the Media Arts Center event at the U.S. Grant Hotel for over 200 of San Diego’s best and brightest in the media world. Although I suppose the event was really to promote the biggest stars, directors, writers and producers in the Latino entertainment and film industry, like Gonzalo de la Torre and Jose Yenque, who happened to be on hand to answer questions about this years creations. I like to pretend that it’s all about me.
The crowd was entertained by the girls from Latin Grooves and Deseo Dance Companies who wore little more than colorfully elaborate headdresses and a few strategically placed beads. The shook their tail feathers, literally, to the seductive sounds of Latin music and wowed the crowd with their style and grace.
The kick-off party did a wonderful job of reeling in the excitement for this year’s film festival. With everything from Latino food, music, fashion and dance on hand, it inspired the need to experience this year’s best in Latin films. I, for one, can’t wait to see what this year holds for the festival, especially having seen some of its feature actors that you’ll get to visually devour on the big screen. I promise you, at the very least, your eyes will thank you. There are some seriously good-looking people in the Latin film industry.
The 18th annual event runs from March 10th-March 20th at the Ultrastar Mission Valley Cinema’s in Hazard Center. Tickets are only $10 so get out there and purchase them now!
