So for just a little more than a year, Hanis Cavin has quietly been gathering a loyal following of passionate customers who RAVE his little North Park hole in the wall. The Carnitas Snack Shack has been on the “OMG I Can’t Believe You Haven’t Been There Yet” list for quite some time. My friend Yolanda (and she KNOWS her food) swears by the food as does food architect extraordinaire, Andrew Spurgin.
The tiny little shack in front conjures up the goodness in a very confined space and out back… they have a little garden, a great patio dining area and a beer bar with a few good beers on tap to whet your whistle. (Cash Only out back or in line again you go) Even Freda Moon (freelance writer for the NY Times) put it on her list of things to do in San Diego in 36 hours!

Eater San Diego Burger $8
We start by fresh-grinding pastured pork shoulder from Hill Family Farm (from the Blue Mountains near Pendleton Oregon). Then we add carrots, peppers and parsley. Pork belly gets braised in molasses and sweet chili sauce, sliced, and then fried crisp and piled on top with fresh watercress. An artisan pretzel bun from local Sadie Rose Baking Co. is spread with Tellicherry peppercorn and lemon aioli. Available during Eater Burger Week, April 15-21, 2013.
I just happened to be in the area on a Saturday around lunch time (STARVING) so my husband and I decided to check out the hours and damn it… Carnitas Snack Shack didn’t open until noon but it was only 11:30am. It was a GOOD THING I was early! This was the line out front!

The Beet Terrine, Carnitas Tacos & their version of a BLT.
