Dear Under 30… We’ve Failed You
How could we have put you in this treacherous position? You have grown up and ventured out into the world with all the confidence of a strong human without any of the experience of true defeat and discipline.
WHAT WE SEE
You stride into the workplace, usually run and organized by those who have already had their hard knock lessons. You, with your worldly, albeit intangibly digital, insight as to the way things should be done, forget that it takes time to earn respect and power to speak to people in a way that commands a listen.
You have somehow not been given the tools that buzz at your brain before your mouth opens. You show your inability to control your emotions out loud and ON FACEBOOK and in EMAILS. (Have you not heard “NEVER PUT IT IN WRITING”?) You have not been prepared with one simple concept; professionalism.
You take to the public world all your grievances and document your immaturity. This is your resume, not the lengthy list of work experience that you fluff up to create a neat, beautiful facade of you.
Do you really think we employers take that written word as the only truth? We did not become employers by being naive. Your public rants on social media or on the floor in the workplace transcend your application and resume as a much more credible source for a potential employer as to if we want to invite you into our team.
Employers no longer need to call HR departments or past employers for a “reference” which usually only consists of the confirmation of position and date of employment. YOU have volunteered as a poor reference with your lack of professionalism. The digital world is unbiased. It works both for and against you. It simply exists to let the outside world come to their own conclusions.
Learn to be Professional… just a few of the many points
- Accept feedback and take a breath.
- Deliver your angst calmly and after you have thought things through instead of in the heat of moment.
- Remember to whom you are speaking. Do they sign your paycheck?
- Suggest improvements in the workplace as opposed to demanding because you know better.
- Understand that you may not have all the information for why your management team is making certain decisions.
- It is their prerogative to let you know or not.
- Consider that an owner has the option to run their business in any fashion they prefer. They are the OWNERS.
- Be careful with whom you share your rants. Even friends like to talk to others besides yourself and words travel fast.
- Reflect on the way you react to things that make you unhappy and think about the following:
How are you being perceived with your reactions?
Outbursts = Spoiled Brat
Do you communicate in a way that would attract another employer?
No employer wants to take on the responsibility of teaching an employee basic professionalism and business etiquette NO MATTER THE INDUSTRY.
Do you understand your responsibilities as a team player?
This does mean doing things to help the company as a whole and you may not always LOVE those tasks. Are you in or are you out?
