La Jolla is a coveted destination for many. The lovely, little, seaside town is a serene corner of San Diego dotted with ocean-view restaurants, luxury shopping, museums and tourist hot spots. Locals love the surfing (famed Windansea Beach), the Sunday farmer’s market and the recreation center. But every spring, La Jolla sheds its classically polished exterior and ups its game for a high shine, uber-sexy, weekend of luxe events and show stopping cars during the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance.
This year, Chairman G. Michael Dorvillier and his committee, brought an all-star collection of automobiles to the high profile event. The kick off on Friday evening was a splendid start at the La Valencia Hotel, flanked with three jaw-dropping Rolls-Royce’s by O’Gara Coach Company. The VIP soiree included live music, food and “the pretty people”, a fashion blogger’s bliss.
For those who did not imbibe too much for the opening ceremonies, an early morning, motor tour of classic cars meandered through San Diego, stopping at a few of the most impressive private car collections in Southern California and concluding with awards and lunch at The Grand Del Mar. Fitting, right? Another VIP party swept across the bluffs of the La Jolla Cove Saturday night with a glamorous “Run Away With the Concours” circus theme. The sunset soiree was captivating.
Sunday, the grand finale event of the weekend, The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance and La Jolla Motor Car Classic welcomed car enthusiasts of ALL kinds. There was a rather large showing of classic Porsche and Rolls-Royce examples, a few obscure and rare marques, all-time era classics from Mercedes-Benz and nostalgic American muscle cars. The spring concours was a fun time for all ages and all levels of appreciation from the nonchalant admirer to the automobile fanatic. Kids under 14 were free, making the weekend an easy choice for families.
If you plan to attend the 2016 show, spring for the VIP ticket which includes a tasting garden filled with incredible food and drinks. Walking around the car show can create quite the appetite.
