Sapphire Sparkles With Stylish Success

by A Gal & Her Fork, Marie Daniels No Comments

The ladies of Las Patronas sparkled once again as they elegantly transformed the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club into a stunning underwater world for their 65th annual Jewel Ball’s Sapphire theme on Saturday, August 6. “I was inspired by the ocean and our own sparkling seaside jewel of La Jolla,” said ball designer (and Las Patronas member) Kathy Broekema of her whimsical vision which featured a sea of blues and greens with splashes of coral complemented with sea creatures decorating the tables and live fish in the entryway.

Upon arrival, approximately 700 guests were greeted by Jewel Ball chair Sue Wagener, co-chairs Pat Marsch and Elaine Murphy, and president Sallie Warren for stunning photo opportunities before entering the dramatic venue for an evening of elegant entertainment. “Sapphire is the gemstone associated with a 65th anniversary,” explained Wagener, “so it was a perfect fit to go with our dramatic deep-sea design elements, as well as our celebration of 65 years of supporting the critical needs of San Diego nonprofits.”

Once inside, onlookers were in awe of the gravity-defying acrobatics of Aerial Revolution including contortionists and performers on stilts circulating through the poolside area. Of course, no undersea gala would be complete without a mermaid as well. Another astounding performance during dinner had jaws dropping over the beauty and flexibility of the artists. Seemingly named just for this event, award-winning Liquid Blue provided music throughout the evening.

Thanks to a delicious array of hors d’ oeuvres with a decidedly oceanic theme from Hyatt Regency La Jolla and Café Japengo as well as the much sought-after sliders from Sammy Ladeki (Roppongi and Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza), guests were well sated as they enjoyed cocktails before dinner.

The evening was a spectacular success for the all-volunteer organization. Major beneficiaries for this year’s Jewel Ball are La Jolla Playhouse, REINS Therapeutic Horsemanship Program, San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation, San Diego Food Bank, and UCSD Shiley Eye Center.
Save the date for next year, Saturday, August 4, 2010. To learn more about the amazing work of Las Patronas, visit LasPatronas.org.
